The layout is based on fond memories John and Pat had traveling on passenger trains. The layout is based on the Santa Fe but doesn’t represent any particular area. It recreates the era when passenger trains were numerous and freight trains had cabooses in the 50’s and 60’s. Many of the Santa Fe caboose types are modeled. The room is divided by a peninsula with ceiling high mountains as a view block. For open houses it is operated as a linear “railfan” layout with double track that splits for a while. The layout is highly detailed including people, signs, vehicles, lighting effects, sound modules and mechanical effects. There are two open back-to-back staging yards. The scenery is flat as well as mountainous with many bridges, rivers, and tunnels. It is nearing completion. The layout uses Digitrax DCC with most locomotives having sound.
