The Milam County Railroad Museum is owned by Milam County and is dedicated to portraying the history of railroads in Milam County. In addition, it is home to the Old Town Cameron exhibit. The museum is volunteer operated and funded with a stipend from Milam County, grants, and donations. Old Town Cameron is a model of how Cameron, Texas appeared in the 1940’s. It is a glimpse back in time and is a remarkable recreation of the town along with an operating model railroad layout. The layout represents the San Antonio & Aransas Pass and the Santa Fe RR, with steam and early generation diesels providing the motive power.

Old Town Cameron is the work of one man, John Johnson, and his wife Frances. John fell in love with his hometown at an early age. As a young adult, he moved to Austin where he formed the idea of making a model of Cameron as he had known it. He found support at a hobby shop and he began creating a miniature replica of downtown Cameron. Out of that beginning came the 18′ by 40′ treasure we now have. John interviewed Cameron citizens, obtained and used old photographs, and conducted other research to ensure the model would be authentic. He said that about 40% of the research was from his childhood memories. It took John 35 years to create and build this magnificent model – and he was still adding to it the week before he passed away!

The museum contains not only the model of Cameron and the model railroad layout, but also other Milam County railroad history displays and artifacts from times gone by. Exhibits change from time to time, so plan on visiting several times a year to see it all!
